After killing hundreds of people in Haiti several days earlier, Hurricane Hazel ripped a path of destruction with sustained winds of 78 mph from the Carolina coast to Toronto, Ontario, in about 12 hours on October 15, 1954. The hurricane hit the Carolinas first, and the United States Weather Bureau reported that “all traces of civilization on the immediate waterfront between the state line and Cape Fear were practically annihilated.” A newlywed couple vacationing on Oak Island near Wilmington, North Carolina, realized the dangerous situation too late and clung to a mattress to survive the rising tide. Connie Ledgett recalled her experience: “At that moment we were at the mercy of the wind and water. Whatever happened to us then was not in our control.” Hurricane Hazel caused 95 deaths and $281 million in property damage across the eastern United States. – Ancestry.com Historical Insight
